And now for something completely different

You know what we need?

Vatican!Fail Bingo Cards.

I haven't worked out what's in all the squares yet, but I've got a good start:
ETA: More squares

Blame the Gays
Blame the Jews
You're being so mean to me!
Blame Therapy
Blame ethnic minorities
Try to make it a local issue
Deny the Holocaust
Quote Irrelevant Scripture
Deny Everything
Backtrack
Blame the Children
God Told Us To

Any other suggestions? These mostly relate to the latest pedophile priest scandal, but there's no limit. Any bit of *!fail that has or could come from the Vatican in response to criticism.

Please note - This is not about religion-bashing. This about institution-bashing. Just so we're clear.

Oooh, those are good!

Scripture can be as relevant as anything else anyone might quote. There is some really good stuff in the Bible. It's just there's also stuff like the entire book of Leviticus.

I don't think it's really a question of separating from the religion, because the actual religion does not support pedophilia, or the hushing up thereof. That would be a bit like shunning democracy because of politicians doing bad things.

It's up to you and how you feel about it, but I think you're OK.

Oh, very true. I meant irrelevant to the situation, should have specified. It's more... hiding behind scripture, I guess? Like some of the generalised (and still very cool) parts of the Bible justify any of this. I get you though.

Well, I'm keeping aware of it in any case. I certainly don't take part in any of the ceremony unless I'm reciting something, and even then only if I feel like it. I attach no spiritual meaning to the words myself, so I don't have a problem with saying the words along with other (especially if the congregation don't know the words to the Lord's Prayer and need the support. I'm so not kidding).

Ah, I gotcha.

No, fair enough. It is massively not cool, and I understand not wanting to appear in any way complicit, especially when you're just there for the singing. I just would be surprised to find many people in NZ who would try to defend it.

The archbishop was really really not impressed by it, it was good to hear.
