debitha: Dalek: Tea and Cake or Death? (DW - Tea and Cake or Death)
Bingo. One mouse corpse, surrounded by what I presume are fly cocoons. Although if you think I am going to google fly reproduction to check, I advise you to rethink your position.

I cannot express to you how grossed out I am. I intend to check under the bed as well, just in case. *shudder*

So that's my Sunday. How are you doing?

I haven't even got round to getting my pics off my camera yet.

I got back from my trip and got a hideous cold - chills and all, so I was off work on Friday. Saturday was orchard day, and gloriously sunny and warm, so I mooched up and put myself on 'lighting the fire and getting the kettle boiled' duty. I actually ended up feeling much better for it.

And then on Saturday night, I got some kind of stomach bug. Oy.

Through all that and since, I've been busy with fandom fest-stuff, so the house and garden require some urgent attention. So I'm writing myself a To Do This Weekend list. And inflicting it on all of you. You know you love it.

- Finish weeding front garden
- Plant bedding plants in front garden
- Pot herbs, and sort out hanging basket, etc.
- Weed back garden - 2/3 done
- Mow lawns (or possibly make flatmate do it next weekend)
- Dishes (cos ew, kitchen)
- Vacuum
- Laundry
- Clean the cat's bowls
- Clean the litter tray I borrowed and return it

Calling her 'Monster' just seems unkind

This is Angel. She is about 16 months old, is sweet and fluffy and quite well behaved, and was returned to the shelter for hospitalising the other cat of the last people who adopted her. My kind of girl, really. :oD

I'm not sure about the name, though. Nothing else has leapt to mind. Current suggestions are 'Mittens', 'Sweetums' (as in the Muppet monster), and 'Minerva'.

I finally have a cat. I feel like I found something I was missing.

The last couple of days in the area have been very frosty. No really. See how white it all is? Frost.

Only, yesterday the snow kicked in as well. Now before you make mock, keep in mind that most of England doesn't get a lot of snow on a regular basis, and the South West very rarely. This is the second time in nearly 7 years I've seen a significant amount of snow on the ground. So I'm working from home. In fairness, I wandered out the front about half an hour ago and no one has even thought about trying to get their car out. Not from my road, anyway.

I'd say I was staying safe, except that I slipped on the stairs earlier and fell down. No major damage, but I've definitely jarred my back a bit. Flatmate's second response was, "Are you OK?" Her first response was, "Well that was clever." Funnily enough she got told to fuck off.

Ooooh, spot who's in a bit of a mood.

Anyway. Here is my back garden as of 8.30 this morning.

Stuffy sinuses, scratchy throat, sneezing, random temperature fluctuations... IT MUST BE CHRISTMAS!

I worked from home today. Possibly I could have got down off my hill safely, but I was too chicken to try. The possible consequences of it going horribly wrong were to unpleasant to contemplate.

"What's the problem?" I hear you ask. "You drive down that hill every day."

That is true. The thing is though, that my road doesn't usually look like this )

I bought this at the Christmas Market in Sunday (OMG SO MANY PEOPLE). It's made of dried oranges, slices of apple, chilli peppers and cinnamon sticks and it smells amazing.

Waters of Mars (the new Doctor Who ep) is pretty damn awesome, overall.

On the downside, Flatmate is now inflicting X-Factor on me. I am retreating back upstairs to the laptop.

I finally heard back from the property managers about whether I can have a cat, and the answer is a conditional 'Yes'.

The conditions are an additional 2 weeks worth of security deposit, that if it's a male it must be fixed (apparently the landlord has had a previous bad experience with moron tenants whose unspayed male cat was kept indoors and the inevitable happened), and that if I put a catflap in I have to pay to have it put in and removed again at the end of the tenancy. In short, it will be an expensive business, and therefore won't happen in the next couple of months, what with months of jetsetting, and Christmas and all. But it could happen. :oD

And now onto the pic-spam: )

This is really just a reminder for me. I have about three different To Do lists, so I thought I'd conglomerate.

Stuff wot needs doing )

Although now that I have, I'm beginning to regret it. Man that's a depressingly long list.

I just emailed the property manager to get them to ask the landlord whether it would be OK for me to get a cat.

I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET A CAT!!! I MISS HAVING A CAT. AND IF I'M ALLOWED, I CAN GO HANG OUT AT CAT HOMES TILL I FIND MY CAT. IT WOULD BE SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!

Sunday was a pretty cheery sort of a day. I had a nice sleep in, got up about 10.30 and, sat there in a patch of morning sunshine with my coffee, decided it was a good day for a barbeque.

There was the odd moment of chaos. When I moved house I dismantled my little bbq (charcoal), and I suddenly realised I had no idea where the bolts were. V and I both hunted all over the house, with V double checking where I'd looked in case I'd missed them, all to no avail. So I rang a neighbour and asked if I could borrow theirs, turned around and promptly saw the pile of nuts and bolts on the shelf over the computer. Go me. :o)

For vegetarian-friendly barbequeing I recommend stuffed mushrooms:

Large cup mushrooms
Blue cheese
Pine nuts

Pop the stalks out of the mushrooms, chop the stalks finely and put in a bowl.
Chop/crumble the cheese finely, add to bowl. Chop pine nuts and add to bowl.
Mix and spoon back into mushrooms.
Mushrooms then go straight on the barbie until kind of wrinkly.
Eat.

For a non-vege option, chuck in little bits of fried bacon.

In less cheery news, after everyone had gone home I got a call from my Mum. My grandfather has been pretty poorly with the flu for a few weeks now (having been in a residential hospital for 2-3 years). He developed pneumonia which has not responded to antibiotics, so he's now on morphine to see him through to the end. I'm finding it very weird. It's sad, but in a lot of ways I can't help but feel it's for the best.

Cut for pointless maudlin reflection )

At the end of the month Flatmate is having a significant birthday, so we are having a bit of a get-together. Giffy is sadly unable to make it, but Miss TP and Smarla will be along. The last one was a nice night, apart from some alcohol-induced paranoia on the part of Flatmate which resulted in some door-slamming and a... I suppose a scolding - is it a row if there's really only one person doing the talking? Fingers crossed for this time. It's going to be a full house overnight. TP is crashing, as is a school friend of mine and Flatmate's, and a friend now living in Nottingham and Flatmate's boyfriend. But we have a plan, so it will all be fine.

So I guess our little heatwave is over then. Ah pouring rain and thunder, how I have not missed you. At least it should be sunny by Monday. Sigh.

Friday is Pizza Day here in the office. Domino's opens at lunchtime on Fridays with a half price lunch deal. Mighty Meaty with extra cheese, you will be mine. Oh yes. You will be mine. (EDIT: Make that you HAVE been mine. Om nom nom.)

Workmate K is proofing, so is mainlining old-school house to help maintain her sanity. She got all excited when Sandstorm by Darude came on, and we enthused. I remember Sandstorm. Good times. Itunes here I come.

I am working, I promise, it's just that I am also overwhelmed by the urge to ramble, and everyone in the office is very focussed at the moment.

Blah. I go now.

Me: Chicken Pie is good, but it could probably have done with a bit longer in the oven.
Flatmate: Oh sorry.
Me: No worries, if I get a raging case of food poisoning, it's all your fault.
Flatmate: OK!

Flatmate: Can that really happen?
Me: ...

The pie wasn't that cold, but I must say that I have not felt at my best for the last few days. How can you NOT KNOW THAT, and yet not die of dysentery? Also, how do you start teaching someone who's almost 30 basic food hygiene?

... You are assaulted by large and elaborate spider webs from arachnids left too long undisturbed.
... You have to lift the flymo and let it down over the grass.
... The grass kills the flymo.
... The bottom of the pile of weeds and clippings from your last gardening binge is actually compost.

And don't even ask about the creepers.

Oh dear!

Edit: OK, I know it's been wet around here for about a month, but there are FROGS in my garden. What the hell?

I haven't done a proper post in so long, I think I've forgotten how! Where to start?

I have been climbing a couple of times this year, but not as often as I'd like. I signed up for the Neolithhic Britain course, which is really interesting - looking at, amongst other things, the transition from hunter/gatherer lifestyle to settlements and domestication. I am part-way through stress-management coaching, which is also very interesting - thinking about how you respond to things and why, and how to change it. Hopefully that will help a lot when things pick up at work again. (Work has actually been pretty quiet lately, realtively speaking.)

Last night Flatmate and I threw a party, basically because it has been grey and manky for ages, and I figured everyone needed an excuse to throw on their glad-rags and get pissed. It seems I was correct. :o) Formal dress is always fun. Especially when the guys get out the dinner jackets. Class. I busted out my dress from Miss Scarlet's wedding. Which I am proud to say still fits! It's a little tighter than it used to be, but apparently that doesn't detract. :oD Although I think what impressed people most was the lunar eclipse I laid on. Can I throw a party, or what? The last folk left about 4.30. I have not been up that late in a very very very long time. Then I got up at 8.30 to feed and water a couple of friends who had stayed over, but had an early start. This afternoon is not going to be pretty. I am going to go have my breakfast/brunch/lunch/whatever. Mmmm, fried everything.

Imogen Heap is excellent morning-after-the-party music.

It is now confirmed that we will be moving in on Saturday, which is quite the relief. In the meantime, I am cat-sitting for a friend who is away on a course for the week.

It must be said that her cats, while sweet, are more neurotic than most. Which is saying something, considering that cats pretty much invented the concept.

It feels pretty weird to be "going home" to somebody else's house. I'm just grateful to have anywhere TO go home to.

So I get a home on Saturday, and internet at home again on the Wednesday after that. UK providers are so slow.

And I'm such a whiner.

Love and kisses!
debitha: Mermaid in silhouette (Default)
I started typing a rant, but I'm too tired to even type out the whole debacle. Basically, we're on a tight timeline to get the paperwork sorted for moving in on Saturday, and a number of people have mucked up along the line, so that when I called back for the second time this afternoon, the short version was that we couldn't move until Monday at the earliest. I don't even need to explain all the ways in which that is a disaster.

The woman on the phone stonewalled me the entire conversation, failed to tell me what the actual problem was, only that it "Probably wouldn't be solved tomorrow", and generally just responded with "No" to any suggestion I had. Flatmate goes in after work finds out that they couldn't get in touch with the guarantor (flatmate could and did). Information was exchanged. We await one last piece of info for flatmate's reference and we're good. Handover can happen tomorrow afternoon. I have to take some time off work, but I think they'd prefer that to me (and my furniture) moving into the downstairs office for the week.

It all sounds like it might be OK now, but there was an hour and a half or so this afternoon that was NOT GOOD.

I need another drink.

Watch this space.
